This is a big day for the franchise. Bringing these two iconic characters back together again in Obi-Wan Kenobi, ten years (canonically) after they fought among volcanoes, hover boards and, ultimately, severed limbs… I can’t even imagine what that will be like. And, apparently, neither can Hayden Christensen. The Verge reported him as saying:

“It was such an incredible journey playing Anakin Skywalker. Of course, Anakin and Obi-Wan weren’t on the greatest of terms when we last saw them… It will be interesting to see what an amazing director like Deborah Chow has in store for us all. I’m excited to work with Ewan again. It feels good to be back.”

That fight between the two old friends, Jedi Master and Padawan, on Mustafar was the biggest moment of the whole Star Wars prequel trilogy. There’s a lot of mixed feeling about episodes one, two and three, but no one can deny the tension and art of this seriously long fight scene. The stakes were high, the swings were hard, and hearts and bodies were broken. There was no chance, in Obi-Wan’s mind, that Anakin would live after that battle. He left him there, smoking and burning alive on Mustafar thinking he had sadly defeated his protegé… but he was so very wrong.

Now in Obi-Wan Kenobi, they’re seasoned enemies; Jedi Master and Sith Lord, meeting and fighting once again; something that fans thought they’d never see. And, if it’s anything like their battle of old- with the advances in cinema over the past fifteen years- this will be a duel to talk about for the next decade and a half.

“The most beautiful thing of all is that it’s brought me back together with Hayden,” McGregor said. “It’ll be amazing to bring those characters back together again, very unexpectedly. Having another swing at each other might be quite satisfying for everybody. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we’re going to enjoy making it.”

Production for Obi-Wan Kenobi will start in March of 2021.
