Cornelia Funke, whose bestseller Inkheart was adapted into a film starring Helen Mirren and Andy Serkis, can’t hide her excitement to turn her favorite film into a book, saying:
It demonstrates what I believe to be true: that fantasy is the sharpest tool to develop and unveil all the miracles and the terrors of our reality. It is both political and timeless, a rare achievement in storytelling. My life has often given me reason to believe in magic. But when Guillermo del Toro asked me to turn my favourite movie into a novel, even I wondered whether I had entered the realm of fairy tales.
Pan’s Labyrinth takes place during the Spanish Civil War in the 1940s. The protagonist Ophelia moves into a home near a dark mysterious forest. With a ruthless abusive war general as a stepfather and a terribly ill mother, Ophelia’s dreadful life changes when she meets a faun who tells her she is the daughter of a fairy king.
Mexican director del Toro’s films often focus on the horrors and effects of the Spanish Civil War. The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth, both fantasy is used to escape the true terror of life. Del Toro uses mass media to educate audiences about the everlasting effects of the Spanish Civil War through different perspectives. This upcoming book will surely explore magical realism, making it a perfect fairytale for adults.
