Following the success of Rooney’s Normal People book to screen adaptation, the same team has been developing her 2017 debut novel into a Hulu miniseries as well.

The minute-long teaser released on February 8th really played up the story’s sultry, salacious side, but this full trailer reassures us that the tender and introspective quality of Rooney’s narrative appears to come through just as strong. Especially being soundtracked by an original Phoebe Bridgers song — we’re in for an emotional ride. The song, “Sidelines,” comes out on Friday, April 15th.

Bridgers’ contribution has sparked some interesting conversation on Twitter regarding all of the connections between the “Sally Rooney cinematic universe,” Phoebe Bridgers, and Taylor Swift’s tangential relation to the production.

Can we hope for a “Nothing New” reunion on the ‘Conversations With Friends’ soundtrack?

Sally Rooney’s 2017 debut novel is the story of two friends in their early twenties — Frances (played by newcomer Alison Oliver) and Bobbi (Sasha Lane of American Honey) and their friendship/entanglement with an older married couple, Nick and Melissa (Joe Alwyn of The Favourite and Jemima Kirke of HBO’s Girls).

Readers love Sally Rooney for her ability to weave engaging romances with themes of mental health, class consciousness, sexuality, and more.
