We all love a good book-to-movie adaptation, but what about a comic book to tv show adaptation? Yes, please! Here are five comic books that have been adapted into TV shows you should put on your must-watch list if you haven’t binged them already.
I can absolutely admit I have binged watched almost all of these multiple times. Not only are all of these shows perfect to binge for spooky season, but they are also such iconic adaptations of some of our favorite comic books.
1. Riverdale on The CW and Netflix
Program creator, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, added a horror twist to the beloved Archie comics that continue to have a hold on me. Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), and the rest of the Riverdale gang get wrapped up in the dark and twisted heart of the town. It was previously announced that Season 7 will be the last of the iconic CW series, so now is a great time to catch up!
2. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix
Did I say Riverdale was spooky? Multiply that by 100, and you’ll have the chilling Sabrina the Teenage Witch adaptation from the Archie universe! The program creator for this show is also Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Coincidence? Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) battles through a coming-of-age story when she has to choose between her witch life and her human life. Obviously, decisions we all have faced before, right? Filled with horror and the occult, it is a must-watch right now.
3. The Umbrella Academy on Netflix
Want to hear the best fun fact ever? The Umbrella Academy is an adaptation of the comic book series created and written by none other than Gerard Way. Yes, you read that correctly. The iconic My Chemical Romance lead singer gave us this comic book series! Originally released by Dark Horse Comics in 2007, the Netflix series created by Steve Blackman continues to be a hit since its release in 2019. Season 3 hit Netflix in June 2022, and they renewed for a fourth season in August 2022 that will be its final.
4. The Addams Family on Prime Video
Did you know The Addams Family was originally a cartoon series in The New Yorker beginning in 1938? Now you do! Since its origination, this spooky family continues to appear all over our TV in shows and movies. Charles Addams created the original cartoon, and producer Nat Perrin later adapted it into a show in 1964. You can find this adaptation and others on Prime Video.
5. Locke & Key
When I started watching this when it came out, I had no idea it was a comic book adaptation! Originally written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodríguez, Netflix’s adaptation of the comic book series hit our screens in 2020 and shook us all to the core. I will admit that I watched Season 1 in one day. One day! Season 3 is on Netflix now and is, unfortunately, the series last season. Find out exactly how many mysterious keys there really are (and what they do) by binge-watching this show!
