For a young girl, loss is very difficult when you still have comforting memories with them. In The Pink Pajamas, we follow a young girl who loves her aunt, Ah Yi. Ah Yi has a sewing machine that she uses to make soft, tailored pajamas for her niece. The young girl loves them all, except for recent pajamas that her aunt sewed because they are pink. Pink happens to be the young girl’s least favorite color, but she will never tell her aunt that. However, her aunt can read her face and knows she doesn’t like those pajamas, and she tells her niece that she will make another pair.
Suddenly, Ah Yi gets ill and can’t use her sewing machine. She goes to the hospital and doesn’t come home. Her niece struggles to understand and cope with her loss until she realizes the pink pajamas she hated were always wonderful because her aunt made them. Those pajamas are always special to her because her aunt made them for her.
Everything is so precious when they are made or given by a beloved family member. Loss also shakes up children, so they need as much support as they can to understand loss. For this young girl, while she hated the color pink, she could get past that hatred and love it because her aunt made those pajamas for her. This is a kindness that all children need to learn, especially when it comes to building relationships. This young girl is now forever changed, and she will always see her aunt when she looks at those pink pajamas.
Little Llama Needs Pajama by Melissa Winn, Illustrated by Melissa Winn
In an interactive alphabet book with zoo animals, what could be more fun? Little Llama Needs Pajama focuses on Little Llama, who wants to become someone else. Her animal friends start helping her find the right pajamas, but she finds out that all the pajamas have at least one flaw. This book teaches children how to love themselves while also teaching children about the animal kingdom! By trying on different pajamas that represent the other animals, Little Llama realizes that she shouldn’t try to be like the others.
Being comfortable in one’s skin can take a lifetime of self-love and reflection. This kind of message in a children’s book shows children early on not to envy other people. Children, adults included, can love themselves as they are with all of their imperfections. This is a lovely message that throws pajamas in the mix!
Vegetables in Pajamas by Jared Chapman, Illustrated by Jared Chapman
We’ve heard about people and animals in pajamas, but what about vegetables in pajamas? Vegetables in Pajamas show the different kinds of pajamas that we can wear! There are pajamas for when it’s hot and cold. There are even pajamas that are mixed and some that match! There are pajamas for sleeping over at someone’s house and pajamas for sleeping in. Either way, pajamas are here to give you that comfort at night.
It’s such a cute addition to include vegetables that wear pajamas! The hope with this book is probably to get children to like vegetables more (not going to happen). The vegetables get to go to bed as children do, so this shows a type of comfort in knowing that, at least in this book, vegetables get to go to bed and experience pajamas as children do.
Why Weren’t The Firefighters Wearing Pajamas? by Jay Rosenstein, Illustrated by Jim Starr
While many families can go to bed at night, there are many adults who can’t because they are out saving the world. In Why Weren’t The Firefighters Wearing Pajamas, Danny looks out his grandparents’ window and sees a fire engine race past. Danny wonders why the firefighters aren’t wearing pajamas since he and his grandparents are in theirs. Danny goes on an adventure around the city to figure out that many people work at nighttime, including firefighters, doctors, and newspaper reporters. Nighttime can be terrifying for children, but this helps slow that fear when children realize that good adults work at nighttime.
This story inspires empathy in kids by expanding their small world to those who can’t relax at night. By going on that journey, Danny realizes more about the real world, including the different jobs that adults can have. This may also inspire kids to take on these jobs when they are older, saving lives or spreading valuable news. This book would be great to read to a class dressed up in their parents’ work uniform daily!

Did you ever wonder if penguins could wear pajamas? They absolutely do! In Penguin in Pajamas, we follow Pip the Penguin, who loves his pajamas, especially in the Antarctic! This book is meant to be a cute book for kids to giggle and laugh at while loving Pip the Penguin. The book also contains rhymes and other Arctic animals that love their pajamas!
This is a great book to read out loud to children as a bedtime story. Pip the Penguin is also a loveable character that children will connect with when they learn about other types of pajamas and the other Arctic friends that Pip loves! The rhymes are great for children to help them remember the plot points in this book. This sweet book is a great way to help kids feel comfortable before sleeping!

I feel like we have seen many of our furry friends in pajamas. They are cute, and they keep our furry pets warm in the winter! My Dog Wears Pajamas focuses on a sweet pitbull named Indie who loves her pajamas. She has a full closet filled with pajamas to suit every season or mood. Throughout this story, Amber Fawcett breaks down the stigma of pit bulls being mean and aggressive. Oftentimes, dogs behave well depending on how effectively and gently an owner trains them. This sweet and adorable book really expands on how we take care of dogs and provide them with a loving home!
We appreciate books that not only highlight the comfort of pajamas but also focus on treating dogs with the utmost care they deserve! Dogs deserve the absolute best from us, and some dogs love dressing up in different clothes. A focus on dogs in books will always bring joy into whatever subject the author wants readers to concentrate on. There’s also the empathy that factors into books like this that causes us to pay more attention!

Differences in people will always be there, but appreciating those differences will allow you to keep lifelong friends. In Panda Pajama Party, Pop and Lulu Panda have many friends and love spending time together as well. Regardless of their differences, they love each other more for them. Pop and Lulu spend the day getting ready for their pajama party, and the other pandas are invited! This is a great way to teach children about how to make friends and connect with each other.
Friendships are forged when you learn to understand and support each other. By having get-togethers like a pajama party, friends can develop deeper bonds than they had before. Sharing love and spreading it among others is a universally wonderful feeling!
