There’s good news for you Seussians out there hungry for more roast beast. A parodic sequel to Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! will be making its Off Broadway debut despite disputes by Dr. Seuss Enterprises, which watches over Dr. Seuss’s estate.
Written by Matthew Lombardo, the play titled Who’s Holiday! imagines Who-ville decades later where Cindy Lou Who has become an alcoholic with a prescription drug problem. Naturally, it’s a one woman show. Oh, and Lombardo’s Cindy also spent time in jail. She killed her husband. Who was Cindy Lou Who’s unfortunate husband, you ask? The Grinch, of course!
Lombardo’s irreverent take on the Seussian classic riled up the Seuss estate. In 2016, Dr. Seuss Enterprises wrote Lombardo cease-and-desist letters. Lombardo brought the case to court.
Alvin K. Hellerstein, the federal judge on the case, sided with Lombardo. In his filed opinion, Hellerstein wrote “there is virtually no possibility that consumers will go see the play in lieu of reading Grinch or watching an authorized derivative work.”
I’m inclined to agree with Hellerstein. When I first read How the Grinch Stole Christmas! I don’t remember imagining Cindy Lou Who’s life in a trailer park.
