Thanks to Disney+, the long-awaited prequel to the 2017 live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast is now in the works. Currently under the working title, Beauty and the Best, the prequel will be an eight-episode musical series. Josh Gad and Luke Evans will return as LeFou (named Louie in the upcoming series) and Gaston, respectively. Joining the male leads is actress Briana Middleton, who will star as Tilly, Louie’s stepsister.
According to Deadline, Gad will serve as one of the show’s writers and developers. Edward Katsis and Adam Horowitz, who both created the show Once Upon a Time, will join Gad. The three will be the prequel’s executive producers and co-showrunners.
The prequel will take place some years before the events in Beauty and the Beast, including Belle and the Beast’s timeless love story, Playbill reported. The series will follow Gaston, Louie, and Tilly as the trio sets off on an unprecedented journey after Tilly experiences a surprising revelation regarding her past. Deadline adds that the prequel will encompass “romance, comedy, and adventure” alongside mysteries from the past, dangers in the present, and many secrets lurking within the kingdom, brought to the forefront by “old friends” and “new enemies.”
Alan Menken, who composed the score for both the animated 1991 Beauty and the Beast film and the 2017 live-action adaptation, will also produce the soundtrack for the prequel. Glenn Slater (Tangled) will contribute by writing lyrics for the first episode.
Disney Branded Television’s president and chief creative officer Gary Marsh stated, “For anyone who’s ever wondered how a brute like Gaston and a goof like LeFou could have ever become friends and partners, or how a mystical enchantress came to cast that fateful spell on the prince-turned-beast, this series will finally provide those answers…and provoke a whole new set of questions.”
As of now, production for Beauty and the Best is expected to begin in spring 2022.
