Every once in a while, you hear a piece of news and think, “I didn’t even know I needed this, but I am totally here for it!” Well, today is one of those days for Star Trek fans. Brent Spiner, known for his portrayal of Data in Star Trek, is releasing a memoir of sorts appropriately entitled Fan Fiction. In an interview with Vanity Fair, he lets readers know that the novel’s audiobook is filled with fantastic cameos from his iconic Star Trek costars.

Spiner recalls the process for writing the book by saying, “A literary agent approached me for a memoir, but I didn’t want to do it. I said, ‘look, I have a story I’d like to tell, and I can weave in some memoir-y stuff.’” So right off the bat, readers can expect some fiction tales woven through Spiner’s personal stories. For individuals who may not be fans of memoirs, this is the perfect way to bring readers in with exciting stories that they may not expect. He goes on to say that the pandemic made writing a book much easier than he expected because—like many of us stuck at home—there was nothing else for him to do.

When it came to recording the audiobook, Spiner knew there would be no problem in getting other Star Trek alum on board with the project. Cameos include the voices of Patrick Stewart, LeVar Burton, and Jonathan Frakes. Spiner explains, “I sent them the book when I was done, before it was printed, and said, ‘is there anything in here you are uncomfortable with?’…No one asked for any changes.” And although parts of the book are fake, Spiner holds no stops when it comes to telling the true stories of his life. Get ready for quirky tales about earthquakes, placentas (yes, you did read that correctly), and crazy stalker fans.

To be fair, the audiobook for Fan Fiction sounds just as wild as the book itself. If you’re ready to dive into this mem-noir (as it is so appropriately categorized), then click to pre-order the book here. And you can pick up copies of Fan Fiction by Brent Spiner at your local bookstore on October 5. Until then, live long and prosper.
