#Bookstagrammer Of The Week: @readswithrosie

Bookstagram means so much to me- it’s a place where I can be creative and learn about so many great book releases that I need to have RIGHT NOW (my poor wallet).

Book Culture Bookstagram

It’s going to be a wild week but at least one thing will remain the same: bookstagram day! Today’s feature is Rosie/@readswithrosie. She loves to post brightly colored books alongside super cute selfies.

Why did you start your Bookstagram?

When I first moved to San Diego I had some free time before starting my job, and I found myself stalking (ahem.. casually looking) through other people’s bookstagram pages. I decided to start my own to continue to get great book recommendations, as well as to share my own favorites! It has since turned into one of my favorite hobbies- I love reading, photography, and writing reviews, so it’s the perfect combination.

Where are you from?

I was born in Raleigh, North Carolina but was raised in the Bay Area in California. I’ve slowly worked my way down the coast for undergraduate, grad school, and work!

What do you want your Instagram to bring to the world?

When I first started a few years ago, my answer would have been ummm… I don’t know, good book recs? Because I had no idea how exciting and fulfilling running my page could be. Now, my goal is to connect with people over books (duh), but also to be a positive, genuine, and supportive person to others. There are times when social media isn’t a kind place (as a therapist for high schoolers I know this all too well), so it’s important that people feel kindness from me through my page!

Advocacy is also important to me. In addition to book recommendations, I love to talk about my autoimmune diseases to normalize and destigmatize conversations around them, and to be a support to others who may be going through the same thing (or something similar). I also spread awareness about mental health, since that is another passion of mine (and my career!).

Fun Fact about you:

Fun fact- I get nervous when people ask me this because I DON’T KNOW! I guess one would be I love to run outside! It’s so relaxing :)

Favorite Bookstagrammers:

I have so many, because Bookstagram is the most supportive place to be on social media. I have connected with so many amazing people who all bring something special to their pages, from advocacy to the cutest cats/dogs/plants to gorgeous aesthetics, all while being intelligent, genuine, and kind humans.

What’s your special approach to content?

I alternate between book pics and selfies! My selfies are typically for book reviews, and sometimes I sometimes match my makeup, clothes, etc. to the book! For example, Crazy Rich Asians was a fun one because I wore a red lip and extravagant earrings!

Aesthetic / Instagram page theme:

Bright, natural colors mixed with my favorite book selfies!

How often do you post?

Recently I have been posting every day- so many books and book challenges, so little time!!

What does your Bookstagram mean to you?

Bookstagram means so much to me- it’s a place where I can be creative and learn about so many great book releases that I need to have RIGHT NOW (my poor wallet). But more than that, it’s a place where I connect with so many people every day who I have built genuine friendships with- no matter what, I can hop onto bookstagram and talk to someone if I need support or a laugh.

Favorite Bookstore:

I have two- Towne Center Books in Pleasanton, CA (I grew up going here) and Lido Village Books in Newport, CA.

Author to take a selfie with:

Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke- they’re a wonderful author duo who also happen to live in San Diego county!! Hopefully one day I’ll get to meet them :)

Favorite book cover:

Anything with flowers. Or bold, bright colors. Or Pastels. Or lots of yellow. Or blue. So basically… if it’s a book.

Book you have claimed to have read that you didn’t:

Okay so it’s more of a case of confusion- The Light Between Oceans. I am 99.99% sure I read this years ago… but there is the .1% that’s like no you just THINK you did. So who knows, really.

When did you know you had made it as a Bookstagrammer?

I think when I hit 1K I realized that I was actually committing myself to this fun endeavor. 10K was just a shock.

Advice for aspiring Bookstagrammers:

Be genuine. Post what you want. Connect with people you enjoy. Have FUN with it- the second it becomes stressful is when you want to reevaluate what you’re doing it for!
