Bookstagrammer Of The Week: @Bookishandblack

This week’s feature book lover is Sarah/@bookishandblack. She’s a public health researcher with a thriving bookstagram to brag about on the side.

Welcome back to your favorite spot for all things bookstagram! This week’s feature book lover is Sarah/@bookishandblack. She’s a public health researcher with a thriving bookstagram to brag about on the side.

Why did you start your Bookstagram?

I started my bookstagram to connect with fellow readers about books I was reading.  I have friends who enjoy reading but not anyone for whom it is their number one passtime.  When I discovered Bookstagram, the idea of connecting with people who love to read as much as I do really appealed to me.

Where are you from?

I grew up in Maryland, but am from Cote d’Ivoire.

What do you want your Instagram to bring to the world?

I want to help readers (whether you read 10 books a month or 1 book a year) discover new, diverse and fun books.  I also want to teach people to think critically about what they read.

Fun Fact about you?

I can’t ride a bike :(

Favorite Bookstagrammers:

Favorite Books and Authors:

My favorite book is Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.  She is also my favorite author- everything she has written is beautiful and amazing.  I also love Jhumpa Lahiri and Brit Bennett.

Fictional Crush:

I am searching my brain but I cannot think of one from books! From movies, it would be any character Michael B. Jordan plays.

TBR List:

I don’t have enough time to type out the hundreds of books on it haha! But on my immediate TBR I have: Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert; Heavy by Kiese Laymon; The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemison; Frying Plantain by Zalika Reid-Benta.

What’s Your Special Approach to Content?

I try to post books I am reading, books I want to recommend, and upcoming books I am excited for. My goal is to keep it 100% real and honest about my views on what I read.

Aesthetic / Instagram page theme:

I don’t have an overall theme but I gravitate towards brighter pictures.

How often do you post?

About 3 times a week on average.

What does your Bookstagram mean to you?

Bookstagram is an outlet, it’s a place to connect, and it is a place to discover new (whether new releases or new to me) books.

The Mothers by Brit Bennet.

Book you have claimed to have read that you didn’t:

Ha! I don’t do that.

Favorite fandoms:

GOT and Harry Potter.

Advice for aspiring Bookstagrammers?

Post the kind of content that you would want to see and engage with.

Additional bookishness:

People always ask me how I read so much so I will repeat the advice I always give:  Try to find dedicated time to read (30 min before bed, while you drink coffee in the morning, etc.). Put your phone away and on silent while you read. Most importantly, make sure you are reading something you love, not something you think you should be reading.
