‘Bly Manor’ New Season?: Mike Flanagan’s Requirements

‘Haunting’ creator Mike Flanagan explains why fans won’t be getting a third season of the beloved spooky anthology anytime soon. Can we postpone spooky season?

Pop Culture

Is there anything better than spooky season? Trick-or-treating, sweater weather, pumpkin spiced everything and of course a great scary movie giving us ghoul sized goosebumps. Honestly if you’re not singing “This is Halloween” by now, are you even alive? However, this fall is getting a little more scary for all of the wrong reasons; when The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan announced last December he has no plans to revisit the successful franchise. He doubled down on those claims this month. So can we postpone spooky season? Asking for a friend.

But my spooktacular friends, there is light at the end of the tunnel–or should I say manor? While promoting his upcoming horror series Midnight Mass (coming to Netflix on Sep. 24) he states what it would take to return to the beloved anthology:

“One of the things that defines the Haunting anthology for me is that both of them so far are about updating and riffing on existing classic literature. Midnight Mass was always so original and important and personal, it just never felt like it was ever going to be a part of that universe...It would have to be with the right piece of IP, it would have to be with the right ghost-centric story, and it would have to really fit with Bly and Hill House.”

Hill House, which was inspired by Shirley Jackson’s gothic horror novel The Haunting of Hill House,  follows the generational trauma and supernatural hauntings within the Crain family. Along with Bly Manor, inspired by Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw,  a story of a young woman becoming a live-in nanny to two children at a spooky house in the U.K.  Flanagan has even more up his sleeve. His upcoming horror series Midnight Mass stars a lot of familiar faces from the Haunting anthology: Kate Siegel (Theo Crain on Hill House, Viola on Bly Manor), Rahul Kohli (Owen on Bly Manor), Alex Essoe (Charlotte Wingrave on Bly Manor) and Annabeth Gish (Mrs. Dudley on Hill House) to name a few.

Catch this spooktacular hit September 24th on Netflix! Happy watching!
