The 2018 Golden Globe nominations have been announced, and it’s looking like a good year for book adaptations. Specifically, Big Little Lies (based on Liane Moriarty’s novel) has absolutely swept the floor in the TV categories. Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Alexander Skarsgard were all nominated for their performances. The show is also nominated in the Best TV Movie or Limited-Series category.
Other notable book adaptation nominees include Outlander, whose Caitriona Balfe was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series – Drama. That’s big for Outlander, which is frequently overlooked for awards. The Handmaid’s Tale has also scooped a few nominations, including Best TV Series – Drama, and Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series – Drama for Elisabeth Moss’ performance.
Still, if you’re the sort to be frustrated with Hollywood creatives for lacking original ideas, it’s a really great year for original stories. The most nominated feature film is Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, with seven nominations. The two movies following it are The Post and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which both nabbed six nominations. Three of the most nominated movies for the Golden Globes this year are original.

Still, we here at Bookstr do love our movie nominations. Sorry if that’s lowbrow, but we know what we like! It’s nice to see an author’s story be adapted by a whole crew of people and transitioned onto the screen so beautifully that it’s nominated for a bunch of awards. The more people who get to experience a book’s story, the better. And the Golden Globes are putting the spotlight on some killer tales. Check out the full list of nominees here! The Golden Globes will air January 7th on NBC and will be hosted by Seth Meyers.
