HBO’s Big Little Lies is back with a bang, this time featuring famed actress Meryl Streep. This could never have been without an unlikely connection with the author.
As engaging and exciting as the series has been, a second season was never planned by author Liane Moriarty. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Big Little Lies was “intended as a limited series, the first season was an adaptation of Moriarty’s novel, with the seven episodes covering all the source material.”
However, due to the huge following the first season garnered, HBO wanted to keep going, and Moriarty had to come up with new material. After some time she found a break in her writer’s block with the new character, Mary Louise Wright, who was created with Meryl Streep in mind.
Mary Louise Wright is the mother to one of the main heroine’s husband, Perry, who (spoiler alert) is killed by one of the main characters. Perry’s mother’s role in Season 2 becomes a new threat to the main 5, as the truth of what happened to Perry would put them all in danger. Mary Louise is determined to learn the truth of what happened to her son, which just adds to the drama and tension in the story.
Thanks to Meryl Streep’s phenomenal acting, all the drama and tension that this new character adds is magnified to an extraordinary level. Just take a look at this one scene.
None of this would have happened if not for a mysterious connection that Moriarty had no idea she was making with Streep as she made the character with her in mind. For the famed actress, it only took her one look at the script and she was all for joining the cast. This is all thanks to Mary Louise’s name, which happens to be Meryl Streep’s given name.
Author Liane Moriarty really did create the character with Streep in mind, she just didn’t realize to what extent!
