Fans of musicals and hot-and-steamy sex scenes, get ready… well not too ready. According to Bustle, rumors are buzzing about a possible Fifty Shades of Grey musical adaptation. It could be stellar; just look at musical adaptations that have been a huge hit. From Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel, Fun Home to Cats, an adaptation of T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, to Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, lyrical adaptations have proven themselves to be fan favorites.
So while people have not quite raved about the movie adaptations of E.L. James‘ record-breaking trilogy, a musical adaptation has potential for greatness. There’s already a musical version of Fifty Shades, however it’s a parody. Nothing has been set in stone for a serious (as in non-parody) adaptation of the trilogy, but The Sun reports: “Writer E.L James, 53, has confirmed secret talks have taken place with theatre bosses to take her raunchy bestseller to the West End and Broadway.” Secret talks have been confirmed; how elusive!
Say what you will about James’ work, but there’s no denying it’s success. Not everything said about the trilogy is negative. Many have lauded it for opening conversations on female sexuality, as well as normalizing period sex.
A musical could take years to produce, but we’re hoping for some memorable, lyrical hits. Plus, how fun would it be to memorize kinky lyrics? And then sing them to someone…
