Netflix has been making our dreams come true and adapting amazing books into films/series. The next book up for adaption is Erika Sanchez’s novel, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. It will be a film for the streaming service and Sanchez will serve as co producer. Actress America Ferrera will be making her directorial debut for the film.
The book tells the story of Julia Reyes, who is the daughter to first generation Mexican immigrants. Julia and her parents aren’t always on the same page, and her parents wish she were more like her older sister, Olga. However, Olga died in a car accident and now Julia has to hold her family together. Olga was everything her parents ever wanted in a daughter, and now Julia has to deal with the burden of being perfect and while figuring out who she is and who she wants to be.
Ferrera, is a big fan of the book herself and she is looking forward to bringing the story to life. According to Ferrera, the book left her wanting more and she is honored to work on this film. With her passion and love for the book, the film is going to be amazing. It’s a great story about love, loss, and family, and she’s a great choice to adapt the novel.
The co creator of the Netflix series, Gentefied, Linda Yvette Chavez is writing the screenplay. Annonymous Content optioned the rights to the book under a first look deal with Aevitas Creative Management. Fingers crossed more books get adapted this year.
