Amazon has acquired worldwide rights to Iain M. Banks’ first novel Consider Phlebas, Variety reports. Dennis Kelly will adapt Banks’ book for Amazon Studios and Plan B Entertainment. Consider Pheblas was first published in 1987 and follows a war between an advanced society known as the Culture, and a religious, war-mongering people known as the Idirans.
Sharon Tal Yguado, head of scripted series at Amazon Studios has said:
The story of the Culture is so rich and captivating that for years Hollywood has been trying to bring this utopian society to life on the screen. We are honored that we have been chosen, along with Dennis Kelly and Plan B Entertainment, to make ‘Consider Phlebas’ into a television series we think will be loved by fans for years to come.

Dennis Kelly, who co-created Matilda: The Musical with comedian Tim Minchin, says that Banks is a hero to him:
His innate warmth, humor and humanism shines through these novels. Far from being the dystopian nightmares that we are used to, Banks creates a kind of flawed paradise, a society truly worth fighting for — rather than a warning from the future, his books are a beckoning.
This latest fantasy acquisition is in following with Amazon’s recent trend, as late last year, the company announced that it would embark on a TV serialization of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings. It’s strange to think not that long ago, Amazon was selling books. Now they’re making TV shows out of them. Let us know what you think! Are you hyped for Consider Phlebas? Or should Amazon abandon all projects besides developing several Lord of the Rings television shows and become a platform that exclusively creates Lord of the Rings shows? Because that sounds good.
