Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway in Princess Diaries

A Third “Princess Diaries” Movie Could Be on the Way, Says Author Meg Cabot

Anne Hathaway made her film debut as the princess of Genovia in 2001’s “The Princess Diaries,” and Meg Cabot, the author of the books on which the movies are based, says a third film could be on the way.

Per EW: “Cabot confirmed there’s interest in going forward with ‘Princess Diaries 3,’ ‘kind of as a tribute’ to [director Garry] Marshall — but cautioned she had not heard anything more about the film beyond that a script exists.” She goes on to say that Anne Hathaway had an idea for what the third movie might be about.

Royal Wedding: A Princess Diaries Novel,” the eleventh volume of Cabot’s “Princess Diaries” series, was released in 2015, but Cabot does not believe the third movie will follow the storyline of her series. They are “two different universes,” as she says. It makes sense since it has been about thirteen years since moviegoers last visited Genovia.

Since the first film’s release, Anne Hathaway has gone on to adapt several books into major films (“Nicholas Nickleby,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Alice in Wonderland”). Chief among them is “Les Miserables,” for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Hopefully, the hype delivers, and we’ll get to see Hathaway return to her homeland: Genovia.
