A Series of Unfortunate Events Gets Reboot on Netflix

Netflix and Paramount Television are collaborating to recreate Snicket’s best-selling books as a live-action series. The project is being fast-tracked, with a release date in 2016, and the search has begun to find the right director.

“On the search for fantastic material that appeals to both parents and kids, the first stop for generations of readers is  A Series of Unfortunate Events. The world created by Lemony Snicket is unique, darkly funny, and relatable. We can’t wait to bring it to life for Netflix members,” Cindy Holland, VP of Original Content at Netflix, said.

The series is already well-loved, with 13 books that have sold over 65 million copies worldwide and have been translated into over 40 languages. The original adaptation in 2004, starring Jim Carrey, grossed $209 million worldwide.

“I can’t believe it. After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books,” Snicket joked.

Netflix has seen extreme success with original shows in the past including House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. The company’s desire to create memorable and original content could be the perfect match for Snicket’s quirky and dark series.
