While we might associate romance novels with female writers, it should not come as a shock that male authors have dipped their toes in the waters of writing about love — and for longer than you may think! Male writers offer a particularly unique insight to how they perceive romance — and how they write about it.
Romance writing is not exclusionary. Having authors with varied experiences based on their gender allows for romance works to enter into a diverse discussion that all are welcome to explore. Historically speaking, men used to write romance novels under female pen names, which has slowly fallen away. Now, male authors continue to offer their own unique perspectives with their twist on romance novels.

David Nicholls
David Nicholls is a novelist, screenwriter, and former actor who applied his approach to romance writing to a few of his works. Throughout his career, Nicholls noted that a turning point for him was reading P. J. Kananagh’s memoir The Perfect Stranger, which tells the author’s tale of maturation, finding love, and discovering life. Nicholls channeled this inspiration, and his third novel, One Day, became an international bestseller. It had a film adaptation starring Anne Hathaway in 2011, but in 2024 Netflix released a 14-part series adaptation that garnered widespread acclaim.

Rich Amooi
