9 Quotes from ‘Sharp Objects’ to Prep you for the TV Series

In case you missed it, Sharp Objects premiered on HBO earlier this week. The series is based on the novel by Gillian Flynn, the author of Gone Girl and Dark Places. True to Flynn’s usual form, Sharp Objects twists themes such as murder, addiction, mystery, and mental illness into a darkly thrilling tale. The series stars Amy Adams as Camille Preaker, a journalist returning to her hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri to cover a string of disappearances and murders. While there, she explores the darkness of her own past, including the death of her young sister, Marian. To get you in the right mindset to watch the show, here are some memorable and spooky quotes from Gillian Flynn’s debut novel:

1. “People got such a charge from seeing their names in print. Proof of existence. I could picture a squabble of ghosts ripping through piles of newspapers. Pointing at a name on the page. See, there I am. I told you I lived. I told you I was.”

2. “I’ve always been partial to the image of liquor as lubrication, a layer of protection from all the sharp thoughts in your head.”

3. “I’m here, I said, and it felt shockingly comforting, those words. When I’m panicked, I say them aloud to myself. I’m here. I don’t usually feel that I am. I feel like a warm gust of wind could exhale my way and I’d be disappeared forever, not even a sliver of fingernail left behind. On some days, I find this thought calming; on others it chills me.”

4. “Problems always start long before you really, really see them.”

5. “Sometimes I think illness sits inside every woman, waiting for the right moment to bloom. I have known so many sick women all my life. Women with chronic pain, with ever-gestating diseases. Women with conditions. Men, sure, they have bone snaps, they have backaches, they have a surgery or two, yank out a tonsil, insert a shiny plastic hip. Women get consumed.”

6. “Safer to be feared than loved.”

7. “A child weaned on poison considers harm a comfort.”

8. “She’d always been one of those girls who wanted what anyone else had, even if she didn’t want it.”

9. “It sounded artificial, like a beauty pageant contestant pledging world peace. I did feel sad, but articulating it seemed cheap to me.”
