8 Great Celebrity Book Nerds

Why is it so satisfying to know that a celebrity loves to read? Probably because they are such public, influential people. What they say can make a big impact on their fans. Perhaps more importantly, knowing an elusive celebrity is as bookish as us allows us to make a connection with them. “Reese Witherspoon and I are so similar – we are both obsessed with books!” I once said. Probably. While it’s easy to love a celebrity because you love their acting, singing, reality-tv persona, etc… being a book-nerd is a major added plus. Here are some bookish celebs (besides Emma Watson) we can all relate to:

Reese Witherspoon

This Legally Blonde star (ok- she’s been in a lot of other things, but I love Elle Woods!) is more than vocal about her love of books. She has a book club #rwbookclub, so you can either keep up with her reading list or get excellent book recommendations. She is a self-proclaimed book nerd who has starred in a number of book to film adaptations, like WildShe has excellent taste in literature, really!

James Franco

Alongside loving to read, Franco has written some books (most notably Palo Alto) and we’re making an educated guess that he has more books to come. He directed, wrote, and acted in two movies based on books (Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury and As I Lay Dying). He starred in a number of book adaptations (most recently the very well-received adaptation of Stephen King’s 11/22/63), and he starred as Allen Ginsberg in Howl. This is all just a taste of his literary love; his bookish tendencies run much deeper than this.

Uzo Aduba

This Orange is the New Black star (and my personal fave character, ‘Crazy Eyes’) loves books. She constantly posts images of books stacked on books- just look at her suitcase!

Colin Firth

He’s proud, he’s kind, he’s so smart, and there’s another reason to love Mr. Darcy; he loves books! Colin Firth excellently portrayed Mr. Darcy in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice mini-series and has voiced a number of audiobooks. As we learned from The King’s Speech, his voice is powerful and beautiful.

Natalie Portman

This wonderful actress and human and animal rights advocate is a major supporter of reading. In a 2008 interview with O Magazine, Portman stated:

I think it’s so interesting—how we don’t have to get trapped by our own conventions. I studied psychology in school, and the best psychology is in literature. It’s so much easier to understand a character than a theory. You can recognize yourself—or other people—in a different way.

Mindy Kaling

She’s brilliant, she’s hilarious, she’s honest, and she loves books. She takes to social media to share her favorite reads. She has written two amazing books, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me and Why Not Me?which will keep you laughing and nodding in agreement the entire time.

Sarah Jessica Parker

The Sex in the City star gets just as excited in libraries as Carrie does in shoe stores. Now that’s an awesome place to get overjoyed! She’s apparently part of a book club and is eager to share her favorite books with us all! She also gave an awesome graduation speech at Harvard Law (my point- she’s a smart one).

Daniel Radcliffe

Even as a hard-working preteen, Daniel Radcliffe spent his free time on the set of “Harry Potter” reading. And here we thought Hermione was the only book nerd!

I had to add another image of young Potter…Image courtesy of Stephaniesyverne.
