6 New Book Adaptations Coming in Summer 2017

Instead of watching the entirety of The Office for the tenth time in a row this summer, indulge in some new TV shows and movies! You know what makes the best shows and movies? Those that are based on books, of course. Here’s a list of six new movies and television shows based on books coming out in the summer that we are super excited to watch.

1) The Dark Tower

This story actually takes place after the last book in Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series, but it is based on the story and world created throughout the 8 books. It’s the ultimate battle between the last Gunslinger, Roland, versus the endearing but totally evil Man in Black.

Starring: Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey

Release Date: July 28th

2) Strike

Strike is based on the Cormoran Strike detective novel series written by J.K. Rowling (under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith) and will be airing as series on BBC. A final release date has not yet been set but there’s hope it could be premiering in late August or early September. Check out Rowling’s writing chops on something totally separate from the Harry Potter universe.

Starring: Tom Burke, Holliday Grainger

Release Date: TBD

3) My Cousin Rachel

This movie is based on the mystery and romance novel by the genre-shifting Daphne du Maurier. Phillip Ashley discovers letters about an unnamed woman left behind by his deceased cousin, Ambrose. Are these about his new housemate Rachel? She seems devastated by Ambrose’s death, but could she have had a hand in his cousin’s demise?

Starring: Rachel Weisz, Sam Claflin

Release Date: Out Now!

4) Atomic Blonde

Charlize Theron bought the rights to turn The Coldest City by Antony Johnston into a movie because she loved the story and felt she needed to play the protagonist. This female-led spy story about the last days of the Cold War is filled with twists. We’re so ready for another badass female lead after watching Wonder Woman.

Starring: Charlize Theron, James McAvoy

Release Date: July 28th

5) IT

Another Stephen King classic! A group of kids known as “The Losers’ Club” just try to have fun during their summer off from school but can’t escape the multiple forms of Pennywise. The terrifying clown monster lives off the destruction of the town of Derry, Maine and the club is tired of running away from him. This could only mean one thing: they have to take him down themselves.

Starring: Bill Skarsgard, Finn Wolfhard

Release Date: September 8

6) Midnight, Texas

A new series about a mysterious town in Texas is based on the books by True Blood author, Charlaine Harris, and will air Monday nights on NBC. The people who live in this town are not your typical townspeople, there are more vampires, witches, and psychics than plumbers or electricians.

Starring: Francois Arnaud, Arielle Kebbel

Release Date: July 24th
