6 Book Adaptations You Forgot Were Happening

We are always on the lookout for news of our favorite books hitting the big screen, and so we’re super excited about these six upcoming adaptations. All of them are in pre-production and are slowly, but surely making their way to us, but we wanted to make sure that they were not forgotten.


1. The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

Deadline reported that Moonlight producers and writers have signed on to adapt this book, including writer/director Barry Jenkins. Amazon has taken it on as a limited series and will start production soon! Amazon says, “The Underground Railroad is at once a kinetic adventure tale of one woman’s ferocious will to escape the horrors of bondage and a shattering, powerful meditation on the history we all share.” 



2. My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante

Variety reported that HBO will produce a drama series based on Ferrante’s book, which will air in Italian with English subtitles. Although they project hopes to have thirty-two episodes total, HBO has signed on for the first eight. Amazon says the book is “an abundant, generous, and masterfully plotted page-turner that is also a stylish work of literary fiction destined to delight readers for many generations to come.”



3. Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

HBO is working on an eight episode drama series based on the novel that will star Amy Adams. Marti Nixon has written the screenplay, and author Gillian Flynn also has a hand in the project. The series is set to release in June of 2018. Per Amazon,

“Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls .. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story—and survive this homecoming.” 



4. All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

This adaptation is headed for the big screen with Elle Fanning starring. Currently in pre-production, the film is schedule to release in 2018. Per Amazon, “It’s only with Violet that Finch can be himself—a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak after all. And it’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink.”



5. Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor

Variety reported that HBO optioned the book for a drama series and has signed Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin on as an executive producer. On the book, Amazon says, “Desperate to elude her would-be murderer and to understand her own nature, she embarks on a journey in which she grapples with nature, tradition, history, true love, and the spiritual mysteries of her culture, and ultimately learns why she was given the name she bears: Who Fears Death.”



6. Let it Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle

Universal originally had the adaptation scheduled to hit the big screen in December of 2016, however, they pushed the premiere to November of 2017. We haven’t heard much about it since, but hopefully this date stands. Per Amazon, “the magic of the holidays shines on these hilarious and charming interconnected tales of love, romance, and breathtaking kisses.”
