The rumors have been confirmed: Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield (stars of previous Spider-Man series) will appear in the third film of Tom Holland’s Spider Man: Homesick.
The world can never get enough of Spider-Man. That’s why this iconic Marvel superhero has been recreated over and over again in various universes within the comics (something that popular animated film, Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse explains), and adapted by Marvel Cinematic Universe through multiple series and actors. The current spidey series on the big screen is building off of that love in its newest installment by bringing in previous Spider-Men, Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield, and creating the first ever live-action Spider-Verse.
How does this work? The specifics are not yet available as to exactly how three Peter Parkers will be on-screen in the same universe for the first time, but one thing is clear: there’s going to be some playing around with the structure of their distinct timelines. One theory out there indicates that the presence of Doctor Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) in this film – a hero that has already demonstrated his capacity for manipulating timelines in the penultimate Avenger’s movie, Infinity War – could be responsible. Jamie Foxx will also appear in this film as Electro, the same character that donned the screen in the timeline of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Confused yet?
This will not just be a post-credits cameo scene. It sounds more like an Endgame reveal with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker facing MANY Spider-Man villains from across Sony’s Spider-Man movies, along with some new ones. Maguire’s Spider-Man and Garfield’s Spider-Man will join Holland’s universe to help him defeat them.
This technique of combining timelines is sure to hook viewers, not just from various interests but generations as well. Growing up with Toby Maguire’s Spider-Man influenced many a millennial’s love for this witty and compassionate superhero. And these new films are bringing in a wider audience that includes comic readers and watchers of any age, as well as anyone interested in how Marvel Studios is creating something never seen before in film.
When Marvel’s Avengers: End Game came out, it was evident that a family of films interwoven so intricately over the course of several years was an entirely original and mind-blowing concept. To see this come to fruition in another area of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is to witness ground-shaking ingenuity in not just the comic arena, but in the entirety of film in general.
This anticipated film has been delayed from its November 5th, 2021 release date, but only by one month! This comes at a time when many films in production are stretching out their release dates by one or two years. This newest installment in the Spider-Verse, which spans multiple series and actors, including Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield, is set to drop on December 17th, 2021.
Now, our spider-senses are tingling with this newest rumor:
“… according to insider Daniel Richtman, the studio is reportedly looking to reward [Tom Holland’s] stellar work thus far as the beloved superhero with a brand new contract that’ll lock him in for a lot of new projects. The exact details of the deal are currently unclear, but we do know that it’ll include numerous future appearances for Peter Parker across various films – including solo movies and spinoffs – that’ll take us well into the performer’s young adulthood.”
