Book Culture Fantasy Fiction Opinions Recommendations Romance Young Adult

If you love books with a slow-burn romance, mystery, and magical elements then The Gilded Wolves series by Roshani Chokshi is definitely for you! With the final book in this three-part series, The Bronzed Beasts just released September 21, 2021, it’s only fitting that I recommend this amazing series. Chokshi is a young adult fantasy author and knows how to keep you on your toes with her writing. The three books in order from The Gilded Wolves series are The Gilded Wolves, The Silvered Serpents, and The Bronzed Beasts.

The Silvered Serpents and The Bronzed Beasts are the continuations of Séverin Montagnet-Alarie’s story, which is the main character who we meet in the first book The Gilded Wolves. The Gilded Wolves takes place in Paris in 1889 and revolves around Séverin, a wealthy hotel owner, allowing him to hold secrets and artifacts from The Order. The Order is made up of a slew of powerful houses that manage Forged artifacts and withhold the secrets of the Babel fragments that are what makes it possible for certain people to have the Forging ability for both materials and minds.

Séverin has created an intricate and loyal team to help with his plan to take back what is his. In order to do so, he and his team must work with Séverin’s rival and find an ancient artifact that could change all of their lives. Séverin’s team consists of Tristan, his non-blood-related brother; Enrique, a Filipino historian; Zofia, a Polish engineer; and Laila, an Indian dancer with a hidden secret. Together the five of them must work together to pull off a heist with dangerous risks and secrets along the way.

If the synopsis isn’t enough to have you hooked and wanting to read this series – here are three specific reasons to deep dive into Chokshi’s fantasy world:

1. The Slow Burn Romance

I mentioned earlier that the series includes a slow-burn romance and I am not going to leave you hanging! Among the main heist and countless risks the crew takes is the torturously slow burn between Séverin and Laila. As you read the first book, you find out the two have history. With Laila’s hidden secret she is private and doesn’t allow people to get too close to her. Mixed that with Séverin and his main reasoning for the heist being revenge; the two fall into a dance that has you rooting for them and wanting more.

2. The Characters

Each character has their own skillset, secret, and personality that makes you love them. There’s Séverin who is convinced that obtaining the artifact holds the key to having everything he’s ever wanted. Tristan with his pet tarantula and protective love for Séverin. Laila, who manages to bake and care for everyone’s wellbeing while balancing her own secret. Zofia whose insanely smart but not the best at being social. And last but not least, Enrique is a history nerd with a passion for wanting to help his country find its freedom.

3. The Forging Ability

As this is a fantasy book series, the forging ability is what makes it so! The forging abilities that are discussed, you learn more about as you read. It can be daunting to understand at first, but with Chokshi’s creativity and detail behind the abilities, once you get it, you will be in awe. It is a never seen before concept which makes reading the books even more interesting.
