2015 PEN/Faulkner Award Goes to Debut Novelist

The 2015 winner of the PEN/Faulkner award is newcomer Atticus Lish, who will be taking home the award for his debut novel Preparation for the Next Life

Lish’s award-winning book is a moving but unsentimental novel about a romance between an Iraq war veteran and an illegal Muslim Chinese immigrant. The novel is set in Queens, New York. Though initially published on a very small scale, it became a major hit after rave reviews in the New York Times and other publications.

The PEN/Faulkner award is one of America’s most prestigious literary awards, with a prize of $15,000 and an impressive list of former winners includes Philip Roth, E.L. Doctorow, and Annie Proulx. The PEN/Faulkner award is named after American novelist William Faulkner, who used his Nobel Prize money to fund similar literary awards until 1970.
