Colleen Hoover wrote It Starts with Us for the dedicated fans of It Ends with Us who longed to see Lily and Atlas get their much-deserved happy ending. And she did not disappoint!

Some Hoover fans have said the book felt like an extra-long epilogue to the first book, and that it just gave more closure to Lily’s story. I mostly agree with that opinion (the book wasn’t absolutely needed!), but I certainly am glad Hoover wrote it nonetheless. Lily and Atlas each went through so many difficult times throughout their lives, and it was about time they started making a life together full of love, kindness, and happiness.

I don’t know about you, but these 10 heartwarming quotes from It Starts with Us made my little Lily and Atlas loving heart soar.

“She’s my person, and I am hers, and that’s something I’ve known since the first week we met.”

I think this is something Lily knew all along too. Relationships may have come and gone for her, but a piece of her heart always stayed with Atlas.

“You’re going to drive five miles just to give me a hug?”

“I’d run five miles just to give you a hug.”

Lily and Atlas

I mean, come on, this part of the book was just so sweet! Once Lily and Atlas were reunited, nothing could keep them apart. Atlas would do anything he could to comfort Lily whenever she needed it.

“If it takes a million kisses for her not to think about the scars that surround her heart tattoo, then I’ll kiss her there a million and one times.”

My heart!

“It’s not the first time he’s mentioned I saved him back then, but every time he says it, I want to argue with him. I didn’t save him. All I did was fall in love with him.”

Lily saved Atlas when they were just teenagers, without even trying. Lily showing him that he was worthy of love, when no one else had ever given him that, was enough to give him hope for the better future he deserved.

“I’ve spent my life not making bold moves when it comes to her. I wanted to make sure she knew where I stood this time.”

“Thank you for being the most comforting part of my life right now. Thank you for always being the beacon I need every time I feel lost. Whether you mean to shine on me or not. I am grateful for you. I’ve missed you. I absolutely should have kissed you.”

Atlas is the kind of person everyone should look for in a partner. He never fails to make Lily feel appreciated and valued.

“And every time I kiss you there, I want you to remember why I kissed you there the first time.”

He didn’t want her to think about what Ryle had done to her anymore. When he kissed that spot on her collarbone, he only wanted her tattoo to remind her of the reason she got it in the first place. For him.

“I’m exactly where I belong, being loved by Atlas Corrigan.”

You can stop swimming now, Lily! You finally reached the shore.

“In the past and for forever, you are my favorite person. Always have been. Always will be. I love you. Everything that you are.”

*screams with happiness*

“I can draw a seedling with two tiny branches. Yours and mine. We’ll be on our own brand-new, tiny family tree—one that starts with us.”

This was the line that had me tearing up. I didn’t expect for the most emotional part of the book to be about Atlas and his newly discovered younger brother, Josh, but leave it to Colleen Hoover to throw in at least one emotional twist in each of her books.

It Starts with Us gave us the closure and resolution between Lily and Atlas that I think all of us It Ends with Us fans needed. Thank you, Colleen, for always making sure to put the pieces of our hearts back together after breaking them!
