The results are in for the National Book Foundation’s 2018 5 Under 35 Honorees! The 5 Under 35 is an annual prize that honors five promising, debut fiction writers from around the world.   The honorees are chosen by a panel of previous National Book Award winners, finalists, longlisted authors or even those who have who have been honored a 5 under 35 prize themselves. National Book Foundation Adds First New Award Category in Twenty-Two Years

The National Book Foundation has just announced a fifth National Book Award category: The National Book Award for Translated Literature. A new category hasn’t been added since 1996 when the foundation awarded the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature to Victor Martinez for Parrot in the Oven: Mi Vida.   Because this marks a pretty major step for the National Book Foundation, a unanimous vote was needed from the Board of Directors. The National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35 list has just dropped, and all of this year’s honorees are women. The honorees were selected by previous National Book Award winners, finalists, and previously recognized 5 Under 35 writers. In order to be considered, the writers must have published their first book (either a novel or collection of stories) within the past five years and must be, of course, under the age of thirty-five. The National Book Foundation Plans to Donate to Public Housing

The National Book Foundation is starting the new year off right. They announced that they are committed to transforming communities that have little to no access to books. According to their website, over a quarter of a million books have been secured. Penguin Random House has been the largest benefactor so far by donating over 200,000 books.  In March, over 30 Public Housing Authorities will begin receiving book donations. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Campaign for Grade Level Reading, the Urban Library Council, and the U.S. Department of Education have joined together for this cause.
